Cognitive restructuring: six steps from thought to distance

A short, original walkthrough of thinking → naming → noticing → questioning → unidentifying → distancing — using “I am not enough” as the worked example. CBT/ACT-informed; not therapy.

Why this practice

For ADHD and high-performer brains, “I am not enough” often stops feeling like a sentence and starts feeling like identity. Sticky. Loud. Easy to fuse with. The point of this drill is not to argue yourself into a pep talk — it’s to turn a fused self-judgment into a thought you can examine and release, then choose the next move from values instead of the thought’s story.

Lineage, honestly: cognitive restructuring inside CBT (Beck’s cognitive therapy tradition); REBT’s ABC + disputation (Ellis); later ACT cognitive defusion and mindfulness-based decentering (Hayes and colleagues). A 2023 meta-analytic review treats therapist-delivered cognitive restructuring as one change process linked with better psychotherapy outcomes — useful context, not a claim that this webpage is therapy or that a six-step walkthrough cures anything.

Short: six steps to distance from “I’m not enough.” Watch on YouTube

Worked example: “I am not enough”

  1. 1. Thinking

    I am not enough.

State the sticky thought plainly — fused, as it usually shows up.

  2. 2. Naming

I had a thought that I am not enough.

Put language between you and the claim. Call it a thought.

  3. 3. Noticing

I’m noticing I had the thought that I am not enough.

Widen the frame. You are the one noticing the thought.

  4. 4. Questioning

What evidence is there that I am not enough?

Test the claim like evidence, not like identity.

  5. 5. Unidentifying

I am not the distortion this thought is selling.

Separate self from the distortion the thought is selling.

  6. 6. Distancing

I can let the thought that I’m not enough pass.

Let the thought pass without making it the boss of the next move.
